Surgery can correct the appearance of large, protruding ears. The majority of plastic surgery operations of the ears are generally performed on children between the age of five and sixteen years. Parents refer children for surgery in their pre-school age so as to avoid social embarrassment and teasing by their peers and classmates. However, it is not uncommon for adults to undergo ears cosmetic surgery. The procedure involves remodelling of underdeveloped cartilaginous convolutions of the ear to restore normal anatomical position of the ear. The incision is made behind the ear and in just about all patients, produces an entirely inconspicuous scar*. The plastic surgery can be done under local anaesthesia and sedation on patients over the age of 14 years.

The duration of the surgery is between one and two hours. Staying overnight in the clinic is not necessary. The patient can expect to experience some swelling, bruises and some numbness. Patients can go back to their everyday lives within two to seven days of the surgery.
